We did a clothesline theme for this family mini session day in Iowa City. I am obsessed with how these turned out and literally could do this for every mini session day forever and never get tired of it. We didn’t have a huge turnout for these but it did end up being the hottest day ever, so it’s all good. The weather is sassy and loves making conditions almost uninhabitable on my mini session days. Thank God it doesn’t do this at weddings.
Needless to say, we were all soaked and sweaty in the first two minutes of being outside and that’s what’s wonderful about mini sessions! They’re fast! You would be shocked at how many good photos I can get of your family and kiddos in 15 minutes. It’s quick and pain-free, and perfect for all littles; but especially when your kids are between 1 year and 5 years old. The majority of kids this age don’t have a lot of patience and can quickly get overstimulated. They want to be running off and moving around, and for a lot of kids, they just aren’t going to sit still and smile and look at the camera, no matter how much coaxing or bribing we offer. (I have my tricks though, you can trust me!)
On that note, it’s way less stressful for parents of toddlers who are only looking at 15-20 minutes, rather than an hour, of the acrobatics and immense reserves of patience a longer session sometimes requires to get family photos successfully taken with an energetic or tired little human. So yes, I totally recommend mini sessions for parents of toddlers and spirited children.
I don’t want to deter anyone from a full family session – I can and DO, do these every day with every age and it can be really rewarding to do an activity together that your kids enjoy for longer sessions. A walk in the park, riding bikes, hanging out at the lake, going to the beach, making cookies at home, reading bedtime stories, true lifestyle photography of your family growing up. I love candids and capturing real expressions, as you all know, as well as real-life moments that will bring back all the feels from these days when the kids are grown and having their own babies.
But, for now, let’s check out how these minis turned out. The next mini session date is November 12, 2022 and I’d love to see you there! I’m thinking about doing a Christmas theme, but am gathering what the collective would like to see. I need your vote: fall theme or Christmas? If you have an opinion, comment or shoot me an email. If you read this far, thanks for being here!
