Maquoketa Caves State Park Engagement Session

Maquoketa Caves State Park

Summer greenery, Iowa wildflowers, natural caves in a state park, seriously how much better can it get? Laura and Andrew’s session was so lovely to be a part of. They chose the location as one of their favorite places and I didn’t hesitate to say yes, even though it was a drive for us both! When we got there, the first photo we took with the sun setting on the cave walls was purely magical, and the light disappeared just after we took the first few shots. It was one of those, I-am-so-glad-I-asked-for-that-when-I-did moments. Golden hour haze remained the rest of the session and everything was just right. *chef’s kiss*

Laura & Andrew

I loved their story! Laura actually proposed, and both of them had a ring at this session. I know I am not like all of the others, but I actually enjoy and thrive in change. I love seeing that our culture is moving away from outdated traditions. As a white American who grew up in foster care, I didn’t really get raised in any sort of tradition at all. Most of the traditions I see are extremely outdated, mostly the wedding traditions (think of the garter toss and such). I think there are beautiful traditions that are absolutely worth protecting, honoring and practicing – but in the American dating scene, we have room to play, and that’s beautiful.

Laura is planning a 1930s art deco style wedding at Palmer House Stables in Solon. Yet another wedding I can’t wait to document in 2022! Her plans are so gorgeous and I can’t wait to share them with you!

We walked around the park and really, this Iowa State Park is just magnificent. If you haven’t been, but you like exploring and hiking in the forest, you should definitely go! There’s amazing cave formations of all kinds. It doesn’t even feel like you’re in Iowa.

How to Plan a Session at Maquoketa Caves State Park

In the spring, check to make sure the park is open because they do have hibernating bats, which are protected. After that season is over, it’s just like any other park. Down below in the caves and hiking areas, the sun does dip down before sunset so plan accordingly for a session.

Bring some mosquito repellent in the summer time, and you should be good to go and explore these beautiful caves and trails!
